From the Heavens

There are moments when light doesn't illuminate a landscape — it sculpts it.

This view came from a helicopter hovering above the Kalalau Valley, looking west into the sun as it dropped toward the horizon. The sawtooth ridges of the Kalalau Cathedrals caught the light and broke it — sending rays streaking down into the valley below in long, visible shafts.

From the Heavens is a study in dramatic light — the way a single source can simultaneously illuminate, shadow, and transform an entire landscape. The cliffs don't just catch the light here; they participate in it, their countless contours creating the geometry that turns raw sunlight into something architectural. Careful glazing of the light rays builds volume into the space between the peaks, giving the air itself a physical presence. The starburst at the center is painted as it actually appears when you look into it — overpowering, radiant, impossible to ignore.

The frame is handmade from Curly Maple with a hand-rubbed oil finish — the luminous, rippling grain of the wood resonating with the light that is the subject of the painting.
