“Magic Dragon”

Paintings happen when a moment of inspiration connects with my imagination.

It was an evening walk — a short break from the gallery — when I noticed the sky beginning to shift over Hanalei Bay. I walked to the river mouth where the Hanalei River meets the bay, and watched the clouds build and ignite above the pier. When a Hanalei sunset decides to perform, it does it completely.

Magic Dragon captures the crescendo of that moment — the intense, almost impossible colors at their peak, the pier anchoring the scene in something familiar while the sky does something you could never quite plan for.

The underpainting started loose and surreal, chasing the raw movement and drama of the clouds without worrying about reality yet. From there I worked back toward something more grounded — refining the tones, building the volume, until the light felt true even if the colors remained extraordinary.

The frame is handmade from Ziricote wood and Maple — Ziricote is a rare, dramatically-grained tropical hardwood. Like the painting, it rewards a close look.
